What is hedgehog mushroom?

The hedgehog (H ericium erinaceus, Yamabushitake ) has been part of Asian culture for thousands of years. In ancient China, this mushroom that resembles a lion's tail or an ice stalactite. It has also been highly valued by Buddhist monks for centuries.

Why should you choose food supplement Olimp Ežu Dižadatene? The pharmaceutical company Olimp Laboratories uses an ingredient with a certain amount of active substance, ie a standardized extract, to obtain a valuable product. This dietary supplement contains beta-glucans. They are the structural components of plant cell walls (mainly cereals: oats and barley), yeast and adaptogenic fungi. Chemically speaking, they are long-chain glucose polymers in which individual molecules are connected linearly or branchingly by ß-glycosidic bonds. Beta-glucans contribute to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels. Including beta-glucans from oats or barley as a food ingredient helps reduce the rise in blood glucose levels after a meal. Why fruiting body and not mycelium?

The body of the fungus consists of mycelium, which is usually hidden in the substrate. What we usually call a mushroom is only its compact part - the fruiting body. During cultivation, the mycelium grows on a starch-containing substrate. Mycelium develops only in a long-term process. Undeniably, the mycelium contains several active substances, but it is difficult to separate them from the culture medium in which they have grown. Therefore, a significant part of mycelium-based preparations may consist of worthless starch, which is a polysaccharide.

Polysaccharides or beta-glucans?

Like starch (α-glucan), the active beta-glucans obtained from mushrooms belong to the group of polysaccharides. However, standardization on polysaccharides is not an indicator of the quality of Ežu Dižadaten extract, as they can be obtained almost entirely from the above-mentioned worthless starch. Therefore, it is important to choose a product that contains an extract based on beta-1,3/1,6-D-glucans.
