Erythritol belongs to the group of polyols, i.e. polyhydroxy (sugar) alcohols. It is produced by natural fermentation.
It is found in vegetables, fruits (e.g. grapes, pears), mushrooms, seaweed or wine. It is considered one of the healthiest sweeteners. It deserves this name because of its natural property: it is not metabolised in the human body (we excrete it in the urine). This has no negative health effects.
Erythritol used instead of sugar is less likely to raise blood glucose levels. This helps to maintain the mineralisation of teeth. It has no energy value and can be used in low-calorie and sugar-free diets.
